PORTLAND, Ore. — Zach Edey had 24 factors and 12 rebounds to steer No. 24 Purdue to an 80-68 win over West Virginia in Thursday evening’s opening spherical of the Phil Knight Legacy match.
Mason Gillis added 14 factors for the Boilermakers (4-0) and Brandon Newman got here off the bench to attain eight factors.
Erik Stevenson scored 17 factors because the Mountaineers misplaced (3-1) for the primary time this season. Joe Toussaint added 16 factors from the bench.
The Boilermakers went into halftime with a 43-32 lead. Edey led by 12 factors within the first half.
“I thought he had an average game,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter mentioned of Edey. “He’s a really good player. One of the best players in the country. If you turn 24 and 12 and have an ‘average’ game, that’s pretty cool.”
The Mountaineers extended the Boilermakers’ lead with a 9-0 run late in the second half, finishing within four points before Braden Smith slammed down a 3-pointer with five minutes left to give Purdue a seven-point lead provide. That was the closest thing to West Virginia.
Stevenson scored six straight points to help West Virginia keep up early in the second half but left the game after 13 minutes with an apparent leg injury. He called back four minutes before the end.
“We have been 4-0 up as a result of we have been higher,” said West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins. “We still haven’t executed. We flipped the ball at a very alarming rate and refused to rebound.
Purdue passed West Virginia 34-32, shooting 47.1% from 3-point range (8 for 17).
West Virginia played solid defense and forced 18 turnovers but couldn’t get his shots to fall and went 5 to 22 (22.7%) from beyond the arc.
Purdue: The Boilermakers overcame an unranked West Virginia team to remain undefeated and advance to the PKL Semifinals.
