WHAT A WEEKEND: The Eagles competed in two meetings this past weekend, the first on Friday, Jan. 20 at the Iowa State Triangular and the second in the team’s home opener against Ball State, Jan. 22. At the first meeting, EMU finished third with a 193.575 team score, just a half-point behind leader Iowa State, 194.075, and a tenth of a point behind second-place finisher UC Davis, 193.675. At the weekend’s second meeting, Eastern lost its first conference matchup of the year to the Cardinals, 195,650-193,975.
STRONG SUIT: Five Eagles scored 9,800 or more on bars to give the team an impressive high of 49,175 bars against Ball State on January 22, a mark that equates to their 10th all-time finish in the event’s programming history. Last time on the green and White scored a 49.175 on parallel bars against Ball State on February 24, 2017 and again in Illinois on January 14, 2017.
CHANGE YOUR BEST: In Eastern’s home opener vs. Ball State Sunday, four Eagles made new career highs in five events. on poles, Hadyn Crossen scored a 9.875 Jordan Jankowski and Kyrie Lowe both hit 9,800s, all for new personal bests. Raisa Boris added a new all-around high of 39.275 and vault of 9.750. At her third quorum meeting Cassie Bergin Set a personal best of 9.675 on the beam. Two Eagles also hit previous highs in Boris on Bars, 9,875, and Floor, 9,850, and in Alan Fisher‘s 9,725 on vault.
THREE FOR THREE:Ella Chemotti has finished first in all three matches in eastern Michigan so far this season. At the Arizona State Triangular on Jan. 13, the sophomore placed first on the apparatus with a 9.850 ahead of ASU stars Gracie Reeves and Emily White, who shared second place with 9.825. The following week, at the Iowa State Triangular on January 20, Chemotti posted a season-high 9,925 beam scores to once again lead the event for the Eagles. Against Ball State on Jan. 22, Chemotti’s 9.825 performance on beam earned her a tie for first place in the event with the Cardinals’ Taylor Waldo.
‘RAISE THE BAR:Raisa Boris set a new career high on vault twice last weekend. Boris broke her previous record of 9.675 with a jump performance of 9.700 in Iowa State on January 20th. The junior competed in the all-around for the Eagles, where she scored 9.700 or more in all four events for a 38.975 aggregate score. In the EMU home opener on January 22, Boris set another career high with a 9.750 in vault and 39.275 in all-around, posting the best team finish in both events. The junior also set personal bests on floor, 9.850, and parallel bars, 9.875. Boris’ bars score was good for a tie for first place.
HADYN IT AGAIN:Hadyn Crossen scored two first places on parallel bars at both Eagles meetings this past weekend. Crossen scored 9.775 on apparatus at the Iowa State Triangular on Jan. 20 for first place overall. In the following match, on Jan. 22, the senior posted a career-high 9.875 against Ball State to end up in a three-way tie for first place with his teammate Raisa Boris and Victoria Henry of the Cardinals. Crossen also posted a team-high 9.775 on floor at Iowa State and hit an impressive 9.825 on beam.
FLY AROUND THE MAC: Coming into week three of the 2023 season, Eastern Michigan ranks third in the conference with an average of 48,483 beams. EMU had the best beam score of the year at the Iowa State Triangular on January 20 with a 48.825. Last season, the Eagles occupied the top three spots in the MAC on Beam for the first seven weeks of the 2022 table.
TOP TENNER:Ella chemottiThe average beam score of 9.867 and high of 9.925 alone topped the conference’s beam rankings, ahead of second-place Central Michigan’s Adriana Bustelo. Last season, Chemotti spent three weeks officiating the conference on the phone, ending the team’s 2022 season there with an NQS of 9.875.
Raisa Boris’ average all-around score of 38,817 and high of 39,275 currently ranks sixth in the overall conference. The junior also has a spot on the parallel bars leaderboard for tenth in the event, with an average of 9.817 and a high of 9.875.
KEY EAGLE: The Eastern Gymnastics Coaches are awarded after each competition and select one gymnast to be named the key eagle of that meeting. Alan Fisher won the team’s title by scoring 9,700 on vault on January 20 at the Iowa State Triangular in her fourth collegiate appearance and first since last season’s Kent State Triangular on March 22. Jordan Jankowski snatched the honor after the Eagles’ home opener against Ball State on Jan. 22, when she got into the event’s lineup at the last minute and posted a career-best 9,800 on parallel bars.
KNOWN ENEMIES: A transfer from the University of Pittsburgh, Trinity Macy is no stranger to both West Virginia and East Atlantic Gymnastics League competitions. In her two years as a Panther, Macy has seen action against West Virginia and Towson 13 times. Two years ago, on March 12, 2021, the junior recorded a career-best 9.850 on bars in a doubles against the Mountaineers.
MADE IN THE HEARTLAND: Eastern Michigan Hadyn Crossen and Towson’s Paige Casper hail from the same hometown of Carmel, Indiana. Before their college careers, Crossen and Casper both competed at the Jaycie Phelps Athletic Center under coaches Jaycie Phelps and Dave Marus. Both Crossing and Casper have evolved into important parts of their respective team rosters since their early days in Carmel, Crossing at all four events and Casper on the ground.
LAST TIME VS. WEST VIRGINIA: The last time the Eagles faced the Mountaineers was January 12, 2019 at the Pitt Quad in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eastern placed fourth in the quad meeting behind West Virginia (195,500), Pittsburgh (194,750), and Utah State (194,600). Two years earlier, on March 5, 2017, in West Virginia, the green-whites recorded their sixth-best team result in program history with 196.225. WVU has led the series 3-1 against EMU since 2003.
LAST TIME VS. State of Iowa: The green-whites faced off against the Cyclones just last week at the Iowa State Triangular on Jan. 20. ISU took first place with a team score of 194.075 ahead of UC Davis (193.675) and Eastern (193.575). The Eagles have only faced the Cyclones once since 2003, which ended on March 7, 2021 in a 195,975-194,450 win for Iowa State.
LAST TIME VS. TOWSON: The EMU faced the Tigers last season at the Towson Quad on February 4, 2022. Eastern Michigan Gymnastics placed third in the quad with a total score of 194.575. Host Towson held the lead with a total of 196,700, followed by Temple with 194,650 and LIU with 193,350. The Eagles posted a season-high 49,150 on vault on the quad, which is the second-highest all-time on the apparatus in school history. Anna Grace McCullough and Ella Chemotti both hit a career-high 9,800 on vault at the meet.
