Last time… at Princeton
– The Providence College men’s ice hockey team was defeated 3-2 in overtime by Princeton University in their last non-conference game of the season Tuesday night (Jan. 17) at the Hobey Baker Rink.
– Providence jumped out at 2:26 to an early 1-0 Liam Valentes second goal of the season. Parker Ford found Luke Johnson at the point and he fired a pass to Valente’s stick for a detour past Pearson.
– Brett Berard was looking to make it 2-0 when he went 1-3 for a break away attempt that was abandoned.
– The Tigers equalized with a long point shot through traffic from Adam Robbins at 4:15 in the opening period.
– Special teams played a big role in the second period as teams scored five minor penalties, but neither team prevailed through man advantage.
– The brothers stormed out of the gate in the third period and generated most of the offensive chances. It was Princeton who switched after a 2-on-1 and took the lead at 11:22 through a Nick Seitz goal.
– Just 21 seconds later, Riley Duran In his first game since December 31, the game tied with a backhand through Pearson’s legs. Nick Poisson and Bennett Schimek earned the assists.
– Poisson was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a hit from behind, leaving 3:42 on rule.
– Friar’s penalty served its purpose and was back in action after 1:18 of extra time.
– Princeton scored the winning goal at 3:02 when Jack Cronin put a backhand ball under the bar.
– Providence ended their non-conference schedule 5-4-1.



Parker Ford and Max Crozier Named Hobey Baker nominees
Providence College Senior Co-Captains Max Crozier (Calgary, Alta.) and Parker Ford (Wakefield, RI) were named nominees for the 2023 Hobey Baker Award on Thursday (January 19). Crozier is second on the team with 19 points and leads all brothers with 17 assists. The 17 assists ranks third overall among all Hockey East players and is a career high for the senior in a season. Crozier also has a +10 rating and has blocked a team-high 43 shots this season. Ford leads all brothers with 22 points with nine goals and 13 assists, which is good for fifth among all Hockey East players. His +19 rating leads Hockey East and ranks fifth nationally in that category. Ford also leads all NCAA players in faceoff wins with 327 wins and is just one of three players to have at least 300 wins to the point this season. His overall faceoff success rate this season is 60%. Ford was recently named Hockey East Player of the Week on January 16 after his four-point effort (1-3-4) against Merrimack on January 13.

The brothers had 18 past, present and future players making appearances at the NHL development camps in July. Short term success
With three shorthanded goals over the weekend of Dec. 30-31, the Friars now sit second in the NCAA in that category with six shorties this season — three behind leader Ohio State (9).



Crozier and Ford named captains; Added McDonald to leadership group
The brothers anointed elders Max Crozier and Parker Ford as the team’s co-captains for the 2022-23 season. Both players were assistant captains last season. Before last Friday’s game at Boston College, lead defense Cam McDonald was appointed substitute captain.

Schimek receives monthly/weekly awards; Svedebäck named goalkeeper of the week
student in the first year Bennett Schimek became Hockey East Rookie of the Month and Player of the Week on January 2 after scoring four goals and two assists in December, recording three goals and two assists in two games at the December 30–31 Ledyard Classic.

Providence is the sixth youngest roster in the NCAA at an average age of 21.1 and has 16 total players in first and sophomore years from a roster of 29 players.



Desharnais Makes NHL Debut With Edmonton; Stauber with Chicago
Former brother Vincent Desharnais ’19 made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers on January 11 in Anaheim. He finished the night with three hits in 15:04 Ice Time. Stauber stopped 29 of 32 shots he faced and won in his NHL debut Jan. 21 in St. Louis. He is the fourth goaltender in Friar history to play in the NHL and the 45th overall.



Brothers at the Junior World Championships
student in the first year Yaroslav Chmelar competed with the Czech Republic for the second time at junior world championships. In seven games, Chmelar recorded three goals and two assists with a +8 rating and won a silver medal after defeating Czech Republic 3–2 in overtime in the gold medal game.

The brothers are 203-20-22 all the time under Nate Leaman when scoring three or more goals in a game.

Series History vs. Maine (PC Trails 60-67-7, .474)
The Friars and Black Bears meet for the first time since March 6, 2020 in Orono, where Jeremy Swayman’s 48-saver shutout led Maine to a 1-0 win. Overall, Providence has won three times in a row in the series, all games take place in the Schneider Arena. Until a 3-1 loss on February 9, 2019, Providence was unbeaten in 18 games (17-0-1) and on a 14-game winning streak against the Black Bears.
