Tulsa American Legion serves veterans, involved with local community

TULSA, Okla. – This Veterans Day, 2 News, Oklahoma shines a lightweight on those that put service to the nation earlier than themselves.

The American Legion is a nationwide group serving veterans and others within the community. Post 1 in Tulsa is the longest repeatedly working submit workplace within the nation.

“It’s a point of pride, and we have members across the country who are with us because of it,” mentioned Joseph C. Meyer, commander of Post 1.

Founded in 1919, the Tulsa American Legion shouldn’t be slowing down.

“We want to try that as many people as possible know that we are here,” mentioned Meyer. “I love a packed hall.”

From ping pong, cornhole and pool to steak night time and fish fries. Meyer mentioned the Legion is for everybody!

“We’re trying to do a little bit to help the community at every opportunity,” Meyer mentioned.

And whereas they concentrate on the broader community, there is a marketing campaign known as “Be the One” to cease veteran suicides.

The concept is to be there for somebody, even simply to speak. An concept that Meyer is aware of solely too properly.

“Well, I had a guy, Frank Martinez,” Meyer mentioned. “He’s a service officer here. The post has been closed due to COVID. He came in and opened up and helped me get a VA claim. From that day on I was like, ‘Frank, anything you need, just let me know.’ And here I am, Commander of the American Legion.”

And it’s that selflessness that veteran Allen Usry has seen in others.

“Sometimes just having this brotherhood is enough to help immensely,” Usry said.

A member of the American Legion, Usry said it was one of the reasons he joined the Legion.

“But I also want to help other people to experience it well,” said Usry. “And help veterans transition back to the civilian world.”

Meyer said that connecting with other veterans changed everything.

“With the strength of the boys and the women behind me,” said Meyer. “I mean, they made a big difference.”

Meyer’s mission is to get more veterans involved, just like he and Usry did.

“I would first invite the veteran to come over and attend a meeting. We have our meetings on the first and third Tuesdays at 630,” Meyer said. “Just sit down in a meeting and see what we do . And then you get an idea.”

In order for the submit to run uninterrupted for greater than 100 years, it at all times takes cash.

“You know, when we provide things, it can’t always be for money, you’re not helping the community if you’re constantly asking them to pay for something,” Meyer mentioned.

But by some means it at all times works.

“I’ve never really worried about closing the doors. Because we have faith here, and Faith has always saved us, even when it got to the worst,” Meyer mentioned. “Next thing you know, there’s a check in the mail, and someone kindly donated to the post office. I think people understand what we’re doing and we’re needed here.”

Meyer works to verify everybody is aware of the American Legion is not only for veterans.

“My goal as commander here is to shift the focus a little bit to where we want to fill more of a need for the community that created that need,” Meyer mentioned.

For service members working to earn VA advantages, the Legion is right here to assist.

“If the VA denies you, the Legion is strong in numbers,” Meyer mentioned. “You have people to help you negotiate those claims, which can be pretty overwhelming for veterans, especially when you have other things going on.”

On a nationwide degree, the American Legion is involved in lots of issues.

“I think our crowning glory is that we are the only veteran service organization that is owned by Congress,” Meyer mentioned. “And there is a mandate that Congress has to take a report from us, we’re the one ones. And because of that, we now have a GI invoice. The American Legion did that. The Pact Act, the American Legion, was very involved in imposing this. So the VA was an offshoot of the suggestions of the American Legion. So we work with Congress on a regular basis.”
