Makeup artists know how to elevate a bride’s natural beauty | Lifestyles
A natural, neutral bridal look will show off “your skin, but better.”
New Hampshire makeup artists say brides here seek a fresh-faced beauty on their big day — and maybe a touch of glamor if they’re feeling adventurous.
Janna Wojtas, owner of JW Artistry, said that New Hampshire brides prefer a natural look.
“People want to look like themselves. They don’t want to wear heavy makeup. And they don’t want to feel like they’re wearing a mask,” Wojtas said.
Lyndsey Dwyer, owner of Lyndsey Marie Beauty, agrees that brides here simply want to look fabulous.
“A lot of my brides are more natural. They want that radiant look to look and feel like themselves. A lot of my brides don’t wear makeup at all,” Dwyer said.
Freelance makeup artist Beckah Mitchell of Beckah M Beauty agrees with many brides who like a pared-down style.
“Many clients who want a natural look don’t typically wear anything other than chapstick,” Mitchell said.
trend setting
This natural, radiant, fresh look comes from famous bride Hailey Bieber when she married Justin Bieber a few years ago. It’s a clean, radiant look with subtle shadows, a subtle flick and a nude yet glossy lip shade, an attention-grabbing combination for its simplicity.
Mitchell said the Bieber look can be found on social media sites like TikTok, where images of women with “dewy, beautiful, radiant faces” abound.
“(Bieber is) definitely very natural, very neutral. I think a lot of people want that,” said Wojtas.
Bieber’s face conveys the message that she “just woke up. (It’s) like your skin, but better,” Dwyer said.
One way to achieve this radiant and youthful look is to use rosy tones on the cheekbones to create a soft but “blushed” look.
“We’re definitely going more in the direction of blushing brides,” Mitchell said.
Popular eyeshadow colors include champagne and shimmery pink, or an overall “nude eyeshadow.”
Nevertheless, feeling good is always trendy, they say.
“It’s really important to make sure that the bride feels like herself and that she doesn’t feel like I just turned her into a whole different person,” Wojtas said.
“Most of my brides say, ‘I want to look like me. I don’t want to look back at these photos and not recognize myself,'” Dwyer said.
Glamorous touches
But if you want some glam, consider raised eyeliner, smoky eyes, glittery shades, and bold lips.
“We see a lot more smoky eyeliner. That very heavy winged liner seems to fizzle out, at least on my brides,” Wojtas said.
“The smoky eye is definitely more glamorous as it’s generally a bolder look, but you can also use more neutral smoky eyes for a ‘classic’ look,” Mitchell agreed.
Embellishments such as small pearls or diamonds framing the hair or face add playfulness.
“A few rhinestones in the inner corner of the eye or a few pearls in the hair give it a little pop” while maintaining a “soft, minimalist” look, Mitchell said.
Glam looks can also include metallic eyeshadow, graphic cat eye or winged eyeliner, dramatic false lashes for volume, and deeper lipstick colors.
“I’m more known for the glamorous bride, but I have a lot of clients who still come to me for the natural, soft look,” Mitchell said.
There are also lighter lashes for brides who might feel uncomfortable the first time.If you’re adding a little glamor, consider a dramatic look with a graphic eyeliner or a wing liner, glitter or a smoky eye, and a bold lip color.
“I found a couple who wanted a beautiful dark red lip. It looks so old-Hollywood with a great nude eyeshadow with a winged eyeliner and a bold red lip. I love it,” Mitchell said, though she added that it might be too much for some.
eyelash treatment
Another pressing question: should you use false eyelashes? Some say yes.
“I pretty much insist that everyone (in the bridal shower) do lashes,” Wojtas said, and the look can stick.
“I’ve seen brides get back to me and say, ‘Yeah, she’s not going to stop wearing lashes. She wears eyelashes all the time,’” Wojtas said.
A light lash, not necessarily a bolder one, can give your eyes the right amount of attention.
“You’re going to look at these photos and be like, ‘Oh my god, my eyes are so open. And I look so awake and happy,'” Dwyer said.
lip looks
For New Hampshire brides wanting a natural lip look, stick with nude, light shades.
“I try to match very similar to her natural lip color – usually a light, light shade with nude undertones. Every now and then there are girls who want deeper colors on their lips, and that’s a lot of fun,” Mitchell said.
For example, Wojtas brides often go for an ombré effect for their lips, a throwback to the ’90s that’s achieved by lining the lips, applying a nude lipstick that’s a few shades lighter than the lip liner, and then blind. Finish off with lip gloss. This makes the lips appear fuller and creates depth.
Lip color that colors your lips and keeps them is another winner.
“You don’t have to worry about it coming off later if you kiss your partner at the ceremony,” Dwyer said.
testimonies of the bride
Olya Weddell of Bourne, Mass., got married at the Eagle Mountain House in Jackson last October. Weddell, who likes a natural, makeup-free look, was concerned that too much makeup would make her uncomfortable.
Days before her wedding, she was conflicted.
“I had doubts about my makeup look and whether I wanted liquid or airbrushed,” she wrote in an email.
Liquid foundation can offer better coverage, while airbrush foundation creates a seamless base on which to apply blush, eyeshadow or bronzer.
Dwyer knew exactly what to do.
“(Lyndsey) was able to get the liquid look and added the airbrush as a top coat and it came out flawless,” wrote Weddell, who chose a sparkly pink eyeshadow to make her eyes pop.
Dwyer added false lashes and used a “bold” lip.
“My skin looked radiant and radiant and was still so natural,” Weddell added.
Bride Assunta Torzala, who married in Manchester last May, said she wanted to look “natural with a touch of glamour”.
And purple was her favorite color.
“She wore purple eye shadow everyday and wanted to bring that into her wedding look as her bouquet would complement the look very well,” Dwyer said in an email.
Instead of creating a smoky eye with shades of brown and black, Dwyer used shades of purple and lavender.
For the lipstick, she chose a complementary berry shade. To incorporate the natural look, Dwyer minimized blush and highlights, which helped her eyes pop.
False lashes added glitz and glamor.
“I had soft features, but only the eye area was bold. She gave me the perfect balance of both worlds, making my photos absolutely stunning. I looked like me but with a bang,” Torzala said.
emergency kits
Mitchell, Wojtas, and Dwyer all give the bride a small “emergency touch-up bag” of wedding-day essentials, like lipstick, powder, mascara, and blotters.
Dwyer’s kit includes a makeup wipe, eyelash glue (“in case you cry a lot”), and sometimes translucent powder for an annoying T-zone.
Wojtas provides an oil-based makeup remover, mint, bobby pins, a lipstick sample, and eye masks “in case everyone is hungover and doesn’t feel great the next day,” she said.
It is recommended that brides use waterproof, smudge-proof products, including eyelash glue and finishing spray, which will seal everything. Products with silicone allow moisture from tears or sweat to bead up instead of dripping down your face.
“It essentially adds an extra layer of water resistance…that extra layer of insurance,” Wojtas said.
After all, a proven way to look good on your wedding day is to simply take good care of your skin.
“They should have a great skincare regimen beforehand to give their makeup artists a really great blank canvas,” Mitchell said.
Dwyer, a licensed esthetician, said clean skin is essential. “Make sure you moisturize and cleanse. It makes your skin glow even more when it’s healthy.”
A pre-wedding facial can also combat stress.
“Self-care is such a big trend right now. You will stand taller on the altar. You’ll smile more when people look at you,” Dwyer said.
Whether you want to look like a Hollywood royalty or just the best version of yourself, your wedding look is all about expression and fun.
“There are no hard and fast rules about makeup and you should just live your life the way you want to. I love putting makeup on my face or putting rhinestones on my hair or whatever,” Mitchell said.
