WASHINGTON — Chris Long grew up in Hazleton and made many journeys to Philadelphia for Big 5 winter nights at Palestra and Phillies summer time nights at Veterans Stadium. As he realized methods to change into a sports fan, Long additionally realized how sports groups construct communities between gamers and in the stands.
“The Big 5, you think of tradition, generational, something that becomes part of the fabric of your community,” Long informed The Inquirer. “We want to do that with the women’s team in Kansas City and we’re already seeing it.”
Long received the chance to construct such a neighborhood from the bottom up when he introduced an NWSL team to Kansas City final 12 months. And in simply two seasons, The Current grew to become an enormous hit.
Aside from her efficiency, the membership 3 times surpassed the earlier native attendance report for a ladies’s soccer membership, with a peak of 10,395 in mid-August — miles above the minimal 1,312 that attended former FC Kansas City’s final game in 2017 earlier than retiring this winter .
Now there is a new $18 million apply facility in Riverside, Missouri that opened this summer time. In 2024, the team will open a $120 million, 11,500-seat stadium — the primary stadium constructed particularly for an NWSL team — on the banks of the Missouri River, simply north of rising downtown Kansas City.
And on Saturday night time, The Current performs the NWSL championship game (8 p.m., CBS3 and Paramount+) after profitable the playoffs over No. 4 Houston and No. 1 Seattle.

Long’s co-owners embrace his Kansas City-born spouse, Angie, who he met in Princeton, and Brittany Mahomes — a metropolis socialite who is additionally Patrick Mahomes’ spouse.
They’ve put their cash the place their mouth is, and nowhere is that extra true than on the team’s services. Many NWSL groups play in stunning stadiums however The Current might be distinctive in the case of having one which is actually their very own.
“We’re having discussions around the world about bringing players to Kansas City,” Long stated. “What do you want to be when you’re a professional athlete? You want to get better and you want to win. And it’s hard not to do that if you don’t have the right facilities.”
Long makes a point of centering players, partly because he was one himself, but not in football. He played basketball at Princeton in the mid-1990s and still remembers duels with St. Joseph’s and La Salle at Convention Hall and Penn’s Dynasty on 33rd Street.
So he knew he needed to focus on something that many NWSL teams had previously overlooked: having a high-level training facility. Expansion candidates are already talking a lot about stadiums and fan communities, but little about practice facilities.
“Not offering a correct coaching setting the place athletes can really feel like they belong is a large aggressive drawback,” Long said. “The undeniable fact that we can provide gamers the power to work out, hit weights, get well, go to the server and get your meals, have the lounge after you’ve got been hanging out along with your team – actually virtually the Spending all day there perfecting their crafting abilities is an enormous benefit. And I feel what you are going to see over time is that persons are going to see that mirrored on the sector and on the courtroom.

In reality, a number of gamers pointed to the team’s 9-2-4 report for the reason that Current facility opened in late June.
“They have everything we need in them,” stated midfielder Kristen Edmonds, a North Jersey-born veteran of three NWSL groups and two European groups. “The only thing we have to worry about is stepping onto the field and performing. … Just focusing on being a professional athlete is amazing.”
Goaltender AD Franch, a 10-game former Thorn with the US national team, agreed.
“Chris and Angie and Brittany all wanted KC to be a place that players wanted to come to,” said Franch, who is from Kansas. “The investment they are making – and are already making – is a standard that should already be in place. And I think they recognize that and try to help with that.”
It is also marked by the knowledge that Kansas City FC had two ownership groups that were involved in scandals. The franchise then became the Utah Royals, which also fell into scandal. How did Long make it clear to the Current players that he’s going to do everything right?
“It’s a capital funding. It flies in gamers’ households for sure video games,” he said. “Make certain you are taking care of each ounce of drugs [work] a gamer wants, proper in our yard, sparing no expense. We actually put the gamers on the forefront of all the things we do from a decision-making standpoint.”

Then there are the waves of abuse allegations which have rocked different NWSL groups. As Long meets with different team house owners, he is aware of that some have been recognized as complicit in the Yates investigation – notably Portland’s Merritt Paulson and Chicago’s Arnim Whisler.
Long has indirectly criticized different house owners. But when requested if he would like extra transparency in the league, he did not hesitate to say sure.
“It’s been a troubling time to read these reports,” Long stated. “Our mission – it’s clear, it’s everywhere – is to be the best women’s football club in the world.
“This is not possible without transparency. Whether it’s sharing information about how we’ve run our facilities, whether it’s sharing best practices when it comes to finance, whether it’s about safety in the workplace and making sure everyone feels comfortable when they go to work every day, we want to be at the leadership level in this regard and not lag behind. ”
Long additionally pledged that his team would make the push to additional improve participant salaries.
“We are big supporters of further increases in compensation levels [and] benefits,” he stated. “If you have a player-first mentality, you have to think in that direction, because that’s where it’s going. ”
If The Current succeeds, they will possible have followers far past Kansas City cheering them on.
