JACKSON, Ms. (WLBT) – Miss Mississippi 2022 Emmie Perkins is gearing up to take the stage at the Miss America pageant in simply a few weeks.
On Sunday afternoon, supporters rallied in Vicksburg with a lot encouragement for the Miss Mississippi official dedication and hope that Mississippi will likely be the fifth state consultant to win the Miss America crown.
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs is amongst the supporters of the annual Miss Mississippi pageant. Emmie Perkins will signify Mississippi in the Miss America pageant subsequent month.
Since profitable the state title in June, Perkins has traveled 25,000 miles throughout Mississippi and the nation.
“It was very surreal,” Perkins mentioned. “But I quickly learned that this isn’t just a nine-to-five, you’re always Miss Mississippi no matter where you are, who you reach, who you encourage. And so my favorite thing about being Miss Mississippi so far is volunteering for my school tour of the 82 counties. I don’t know of any other Mississippi that has ever done that before. But the reason I wanted to go to every school and share the impact of the arts was because our state needs to inspire our children to dream.”
Perkins has already been to nearly two dozen schools to promote her Social Impact Initiative and remind students of the dangers of smoking and vaping.
“Through my partnership with the Academy of Family Physicians, I can spread the message of Tar Wars. So combined with Tar Wars and Music is Medicine. I’m getting close to 20. So 1/4 of the way through, but 82 counties is a lot of counties to hit, and when I come back from Miss America, I’m going to go full-fledged across the state and make that happen,” he said Perkins.
Perkins has earned over $20,000 in grants. She competed at Miss Mississippi as Miss Mississippi State University. It was her second year on the Miss Mississippi stage.
She hopes to share her “music is medicine” message with the nation as the next Miss America.
“I’ve seen students go home hungry on a Friday and have nothing to eat on the weekend,” Perkins said. “But when they see the arts and are influenced by the arts, they really feel something emotionally and mentally, and it really connects them to who they are. And it gives them an outlet.”
Miss Mississippi has just a few weeks left before she leaves for Miss America on December 7th. She will be traveling to New York City with Miss Louisiana.
“We are good pals. So that is going to be thrilling. And from there we’re going to spend a few days in New York after which go to Connecticut for the competition. And so on the first day, this morning, I’ve interviews on the 12, candidate quantity seven, after which that night, I’m going to do night costume, and I’m going to do questions and social impression pitch on stage, after which the second night, the thirteenth I’ll do expertise after which there will be a break in between and on the fifteenth it is going to be the most fun day but, the Miss America finals,” Perkins said.
The Miss America pageant is held at the Mohegan Sun Earth Expo and Convention Center in Uncasville, Connecticut.
