University of Kentucky roiled by viral video of racist attack

Kylah Spring stood in entrance of a crowd of fellow University of Kentucky college students earlier this week who had been moved by what she was about to say. It had been lower than 48 hours since a white pupil in Spring unleashed a torrent of racial slurs whereas allegedly punching, kicking and biting her – a second captured in viral video.

At Monday evening’s protest, Spring addressed the girl accused of assaulting her.

“You will not break my spirit and you will be held accountable for your actions,” she stated.

Police and college officers stated accountability is already going down. On Wednesday, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto stated Sophia Rosing, the 22-year-old charged by college police with disorderly conduct, public intoxication, fourth-degree assault and third-degree assault on a police officer, was positioned on everlasting campus . The incident rocked the Lexington, Kentucky campus and put the college within the nationwide highlight.

“I want to emphasize that this behavior was disgusting and devastating to our community. We stand by our students who have been affected by this unacceptable hostility and violence,” Capilouto wrote in an email to students and university staff on Wednesday.

Rosing and her attorney, Fred Peters, did not respond to Washington Post inquiries, but Rosing addressed the incident in an Instagram post captioned, “I AM SORRY.”

“I go private on all my social media and seek therapy. People from all over the world wish me terrible things,” she wrote. “I contacted them [families] of the people I’ve hurt and will donate the rest of my school savings to contribute to the pain I’ve caused. I’m starting from scratch, I just want life to get back to normal.”

In a previous post, Rosing said she’s not a racist but is under the influence.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday, Spring was working at Boyd Hall’s front desk when Rosing, who police would describe as “very drunk,” entered the dorm. Spring said she and some other students tried to help the woman, who then allegedly assaulted them. The video appears to show Rosing repeatedly calling the N-word to Spring while attempting to hit her while Spring held down Rosing’s arms to keep her in check.

“Could you please stop?” Spring asked her.

“No,” Rosing said, when Spring replied, “I don’t get paid enough for this.”

Minutes later, university police arrived at the dorm, where an officer overheard Rosing repeating the N-word to a group of black women, a police report said. After the officer took her away, she allegedly told him she “had a lot of money” and was receiving “special treatment.” When the officer ordered her to sit on a chair, Rosing reportedly kicked him and bit his hand.

Rosing was incarcerated in the Fayette County Detention Center. Records show they bonded the following evening.

“She’s a very, very embarrassed and humiliated young lady,” Peters told NBC News, adding that he plans to “put her into some kind of treatment program and sensitivity program to help her through this situation.”

University officials said they temporarily suspended Rosing within hours of learning what had happened. Peters told NBC News on Tuesday that his client was voluntarily withdrawing from the university. A day later, Capilouto sent an email informing students and staff that Rosing was no longer a student and that he had determined that she could not re-enroll.

“As a community working wholeheartedly to prevent racist violence, we must also work to hold people accountable for their actions,” Capilouto said in his message.

Spring said she’s trying to get through it all with the help of her family and fellow students. On Monday night, she and dozens of others gathered outside a campus library to peacefully protest an anti-racism march. During the protest, people chanted “Black lives matter!” and “No justice, no peace!” according to the Kentucky Kernel, the university’s student newspaper.

Speaking to the crowd and cameras at the event, Spring specifically addressed “my Black UK community”.

“I see you, I feel you and I stand by you. I matter, you matter and we matter. We will be stronger,” she stated. “I want to leave you with a piece of advice. As Michelle Obama once said, when they get low…”

She stretched out her arms and referred to as for the gang to complete.

“We’re going up!” they replied.

In closing, Spring urged her to proceed to strategy the scenario with grace and humility. Keep your heads up and lean on each other “as we heal ourselves and our community,” she stated.

As the gang cheered and applauded, she wiped tears from her eyes.
