Bellarmine basketball signs Lux and Whitaker for 2023-24

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Head Basketball Coach at Bellarmine University Scott Davenport introduced that two distinguished guards — one from Kentucky and one from Indiana — have signed nationwide memorandums of understanding. AJ Lux, a 6-5 guard from Crown Point, Indiana, and Grant Whitaker, a 6-4 guard from Murray, Kentucky, can be Bellarmine Knights within the 2023-24 season.

Davenport stated each gamers are an awesome match for his program.

“AJ has a tremendous connection to Bellarmine,” Davenport stated. “His amazing high school coach, Clint Swan, asked to watch our program, and AJ’s recruitment began. He is a true student of the game, due in large part to the fact that his family are very passionate basketball coaches, former players, and lovers of all thing basketball. AJ has the drive and determination we love when it comes to evaluating prospects. He is a very dedicated young man in the classroom and on the pitch. AJ not only knows where he’s going, he understands how to get there.”

Speaking of Whitaker, Davenport said, “Our program places a strong emphasis on recruiting players who want to join our program and are genuinely willing to do whatever it takes to achieve our goals. Grant was raised, taught and encouraged that to succeed you must devote yourself, make sacrifices and embrace the value of TEAM. We love recruiting winners and Grant is a winner! He wants to be coached and we want players that we want to coach.”

Lux, who averaged 17.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists for Crown Point High School last year, racked up many accolades last season including being named the team’s Co-MVP, being named an IBCA Underclass All-State and participation in the Duneland Athletic All-Conference team.

Lux said Bellarmine’s style of play and the dedication of the players and coaching staff drew him to the school. “I chose Bellarmine because as soon as I arrived on campus I saw how dedicated and selfless the players and coaches were and I knew I wanted to be a part of that,” he said. “Bellarmine is playing a great schedule and I’m looking forward to competing at the highest level in college basketball. They strive for excellence at Bellarmine and the bond they have within the program is what makes Bellarmine such a special place. Bellarmine plays basketball the right way and I’m happy to be a part of it. Louisville is an amazing city and I look forward to continuing my academic and athletic career as a Knight!”

Crown Point head coach Clint Swan stated: “A participant in our system because the third grade, AJ Lux has truly exceeded the excessive expectations that everybody right here had of him. His dedication and love of the sport is contagious, and he’s held in excessive esteem by his teammates and followers. Whitaker, also an honors student with a GPA above 4.0, listed Bellarmine’s dedicated faculty, coaching staff and team who chose the Knights. “I selected Bellarmine University due to the success and expertise of the teaching employees and group,” he said. “The benefits and opportunities of being a Bellarmine Student Athlete are fascinating and exciting to me. I’m a very dedicated player and teammate. I think the lofty goals I’ve set for myself align perfectly with the drive and passion of the Bellarmine basketball program. The Bellarmine coaches and players will help me grow as a person on and off the pitch. I am also impressed with the Bellarmine faculty and their commitment to mentoring student-athletes for life after basketball.”

Murray High School head coach Dior Curtis stated Whitaker’s intelligence and hard-working perspective made him participant for the Knights.

“It’s been a pleasure coaching Grant Whitaker as a basketball player,” stated Curtis. “Grant’s basketball IQ and work ethic set him other than everybody else. He is a person of character and an awesome ambassador for our group and his household. Bellarmine is an outstanding match for Grant and the teaching employees will push him to develop into a good higher participant and individual.
