New Idaho House representatives fill committee rosters leading up to session
BOISE (Idaho Capital Sun) – The Idaho House of Representatives introduced its full checklist of committee assignments Friday morning, with many adjustments in committee chairs and membership.
Almost half of the members of the Idaho legislature are new to the House of Representatives, making most of the committees from the earlier legislature unrecognizable.
Speaker of the House Mike Moyle, R-Star, mentioned following the bulletins that the allocations have been fastidiously thought-about.
“In the last few days we’ve prayed a lot and searched for ourselves as we tried to put these committees together,” Moyle advised the House. “I know that some of you might be really lucky and some of you might not be that lucky. We tried to do what was best for the whole.”
House Democrats bemoaned Moyle’s decision to remove one of her two representatives from the Appropriations Committee and replace Rep. Colin Nash, D-Boise, with a Republican.
Rep. Brent Crane, R-Nampa, will continue to chair the House Affairs Committee, which considers much of social policy legislation, including abortion-related and election-related bills. Rep. Lori McCann, R-Lewiston, will now serve as vice chair of the House Education Committee, with Rep. Julie Yamamoto, R-Caldwell, taking Rep. Lance Clow’s place as chair.
Moyle said a change shouldn’t be seen as a punishment for Clow – just that Yamamoto has the right combination of skills to be chairman.
“Education is vital to me, and I do know there was some disagreement on this committee,” Moyle said. “(Yamamoto) has experience; she is reasonable. I think to find the answer to education we need to get everyone around the table. You have to get everyone talking, everyone has to give a little, take a little. And I think she can.”
The legislative interval begins on January ninth.
