This fall marked a five-year extension of UNG’s Upward Bound Scholarship and a visit to San Francisco to assist highschool college students study school. One of the common components of this system is tutoring.



The University of North Georgia (UNG) Upward Bound Program continues to develop its alternatives to assist underrepresented and underserved highschool college students put together for school.

This fall, this system took 30 college students to the San Francisco space to attend Stanford University. the University of California-Berkeley; California State University, East Bay; and different locations for cultural studying on this area. Although Upward Bound college students from Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia and Gilmer High School in Ellijay, Georgia are common school attendees, this was probably the most in depth journey to this point.

UNG obtained a five-year extension of its $1.4 million Upward Bound grant by August 31, 2027 from the U.S. Department of Education.

“We are pleased that both UB programs have been extended for an additional five years to continue to support students and their families in Hall and Gilmer counties. said Dr. Latrice Richardson, Director of UNG’s Pre-College Access Grant Programs. “In this new grant cycle, we look forward to building on our achievements and overcoming the myriad of challenges to give more TRIO-eligible students greater access to colleges and universities of their choice.”

In addition to varsity visits, Upward Bound provides tutoring twice per week, ACT and SAT prep, and a summer time institute to assist college students obtain their targets.


We are happy that each UB applications have been prolonged for a further 5 years to proceed to assist college students and their households in Hall and Gilmer counties.

“Before, I felt like I wasn’t going to get far because I didn’t have that support. But now I have that support,” said Partida. “I know I will go far. I just need to reach out for that help and know it’s there for me.”

Leslie Benitez, a senior at Gilmer High, mentioned Richardson’s management helped pave the best way for her school journey by pushing Benitez out of her consolation zone. She can recall spending the summers earlier than her freshman yr of highschool for the Upward Bound Summer Institute in a UNG dorm and being intimidated by the faculty campus.

“We went to so many colleges that now I know where I’m comfortable,” Benitez mentioned. “I was really scared, but now I’m not.”
