The Tampa Bay Lightning celebrated their second win of the season by beating the Florida Panthers on Friday night. Beating a solid playoff team like the Panthers might seem like a turning point for the Lightning, but if we take a closer look at the Lightning’s stats, we can see that their problems still haven’t gone away.

The Bolts are still fighting 5v5. The Panthers dominated them in the first two periods of yesterday’s game and the Lightning only managed to even things out in the third period. Hagel, Point and Kucherov’s top line looked better than everyone else at 77.51 xGF% but still failed to convert them into actual goals. According to Evolving-Hockey.com, the Lightning have an overall 39.24 GF% in 5-on-5 this season, making them the fourth-worst team in the league in this category.

The power play has been the Lightning’s most dangerous weapon so far this season. Yesterday, the Bolts added two more power play goals, improving to 31.82 PP% and finishing fourth in the league. Steven Stamkos was an anchor of that power play unit, scoring five of his seven goals on the power play. Nikita Kucherov, who has been on a goal drought since the start of the season, also got five of his seven points from the power play.

Andrei Vasilevskiy was the second best player in the Lightning roster so far. Despite two losses this season, he still has a strong 2.85 GSAx record. Yesterday he stopped 36 of the opponent’s 38 shots.

The New York Islanders have had similar problems in 5-on-5s so far. The Isles are 29th in the league so far with 41.87 xGF%. They are currently 2-2-0 going into the season, conceding a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils where the Isles were comfortably outplayed 41-17. Anders Lee currently leads the team with five points, while Oliver Wahlstrom’s three goals is the team’s best result. The team’s best players are their keepers: Despite quite a heavy workload, both Ilya Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov have strong numbers, especially Sorokin, who leads the league with 5.95 GSAx so far.

The Lightning return to the Amalie Arena for their second game in two days. Don’t expect an extended home game, however, as the Bolts head to California for a trip after tonight’s game.
