Hurricane Nicole had path like Jeanne in 2004; Ian shared Charley’s path

Hours after Hurricane Nicole started its assault on Florida’s jap edge, forecasters marveled on the parallels between the storms in the 2022 and 2004 Florida hurricane seasons. In specific, the paths of two pairs of hurricanes – Nicole and Jeanne and Ian and Charley – confirmed simple and uncanny similarities.

Eighteen years aside, each pairs met in virtually the identical place and adopted virtually similar paths. In each circumstances, the landfalls of the storms have been 43 days aside.

Meteorologists on social media described the coincidences as “wild“, “Great” and “crazy.”

After flooding Florida, Nicole brought heavy rain and tornado risk to the eastern United States

At 3 a.m. Thursday, Nicole made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane south of Vero Beach, Florida.

Eighteen years earlier and less than 15 miles away, Hurricane Jeanne made landfall on the south end of Hutchinson Island on the night of September 25.

Jeanne lashed the island as a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour before weakening to a tropical storm over central Florida, according to the National Weather Service. Jeanne then took a sharp turn along a boomerang-shaped path toward central Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia.

Nicole has also been downgraded to a tropical storm over inland Florida and is also expected to advance north into central Georgia, following a path just a touch west of Jeanne’s.

The tracks of Ian and Charley are virtually similar.

43 days ago, Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa and devastated southwest Florida as a Category 4 storm. It was Florida’s first hurricane of the season.

Charley, Florida’s first hurricane of the 2004 hurricane season, also made landfall near Cayo Costa as a high-end Category 4 storm.

In another uncanny similarity, the National Hurricane Center originally predicted that both Charley and Ian would make landfall near Tampa Bay, but both storms shifted late and struck closer to Fort Myers.

Then each Ian and Charley traveled northeast by the Sunshine State.

Is there an evidence for the coincidences?

It seems the storm similarities have been first observed by Matt Devitt, chief meteorologist for Tampa subsidiary WINK. who posted illustrations on Twitter early Thursday.

Meteorologists haven’t any rationalization for the déjà vu second.

“It’s definitely a exceptional coincidence,” Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, told the Washington Post.

Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University, agreed. “It’s an fascinating oddity, however I feel that is all there may be to it,” he wrote in an e-mail.

While 2022 and 2004 featured oddly similar storm pairings, the two hurricane seasons differed in important ways.

The 2004 Florida hurricane season was characterized by extremely high activity with four large Category 3 or higher storms. That year, Charley started Florida’s season in mid-August. This year, at the end of September, Ian ushered in Florida’s hurricane season.

There have been additionally variations in the depth of the storms.

“Ian was a a lot bigger storm than Charley and consequently did extra harm, whereas Jeanne was a a lot stronger hurricane than Nicole (and consequently did extra harm),” Klotzbach wrote.

Nicole is the 122nd hurricane to hit the state since 1851 – making Florida the most hurricane-devastated state in the country.

Florida has the second longest coastline – 1,350 miles – among the states, behind Alaska. The state juts out into warm, tropical waters, right in the path of hurricanes that sweep across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, making it a prime landing spot during Atlantic hurricane season.

Why Florida is extra liable to hurricanes

Although the 2004 hurricane season started early and was very busy, the 2022 season started late and had near-average activity.
