The Bristol Press – Central fends off Eastern to win 7th straight Battle of the Bell 13-6

Anthony Paolino intercepted a go with 34 seconds remaining and returned it for a landing to seal Bristol Central’s seventh consecutive victory in the annual Battle for the Bell Thursday at Muzzy Field. The Rams scored on their first possession after which held off the Lancers the relaxation of the approach for the 13-6 win.

With a 7-6 lead late in the sport, Central put collectively a time-consuming drive that carried them to the Lancers’ 18 earlier than falling a yard brief in fourth place. With 39 seconds remaining and no timeouts, Eastern tried to put the 82 yards in for the win.

But on the first play of the drive, Paolino stepped in entrance of the display screen go and went unhindered into the finish zone to cushion the Rams. The two-level attempt that may have sealed the win fell brief, however the Lancers have been in a position to stroll away simply two video games earlier than time was up.

“Paolino caught that screen pass every time we did it in training,” mentioned Central coach Jeff Papazian, and he did it once more at the moment when it counted most.”

Interception and a fiddly first-half recovery earned Paolino the Defensive Player of the Game award for the Rams. “The interception was large,” Papazian said, “however I believe the draw and restoration in the first half was a fair greater sport. They have been driving again then and that sport helped us flip the momentum.

It was a quick sport for Eastern and will have been. Fumbling in the second quarter after a 17-yard achieve was a momentum killer after they fought their approach again into rivalry. An further level penalty made the job tougher, leaving the Lancers some extent and climbing late. An important holding name on a fourth down play that appeared to cease the Rams deep in their very own territory helped preserve Central’s final time-consuming drive alive, and a primary down by inches for the Rams after an enormous one The Lancers’ defensive play had allowed Central eat extra clock on this last drive.

“Some unfortunate mistakes hurt us today,” mentioned Eastern coach AJ Julius. “We just weren’t making the games when we needed them the most. I thought we did a lot of good things today. We just couldn’t get the game we needed to keep our drives going.”

Central scored on his first possession. The Rams started with their own 20 after a strong opening kickoff from Gavin Damboise. With Tre Blair and Johnny Rios sharing ball-carrying duties, the Rams drove into midfield before Blair broke free on a 5:54 48-yard touchdown run to play in the period. Oscar Kuzniar scored a crucial extra point to give the Rams a 7-0 lead.

Central took that 7-0 lead into the dressing room after stopping the Lancers in the half on each of their three possessions. The deciding game was Paolino’s fumbled recovery at 30 after Eastern put together his best drive of the half.

The Lancers came out on the second-half kickoff and marched 57 yards in eight games, all on the ground. A big run by Jack Hartley opened the drive and a 14-yard run by Rayshon Andrews put the Lancers in the ten before Kyle Babin knocked him over from the one. But an extra point penalty forced the kick back five yards and it bounced off the post, dropping the Lancers by a point.

The Rams followed that result with a drive that took up the rest of the third period before faltering after a penalty at the Eastern 27. But the Lancers couldn’t get past midfield, kicking the ball away with seven and a half minutes left. There would only be 39 seconds left when they got it back.

Aided by the costly fourth down penalty and a big move to fourth and one, the Rams ate up most of the remaining time with a 14-play drive that took them into the Lancers 20 before flipping them on downs . A play later, Paolino’s interception sealed the win.

“Bristol Central came out and chewed up yards,” Julius said. “They do good things out there and Jeff (Papazian) always puts them in a position to be successful. I’m happy with our seniors’ contribution today, but thank you Bristol Central. You did a really good job today.

Jaiden Fore was the offensive player of the game for the Lancers. The junior running back had 93 yards on 15 carries to lead the offense. Austin Shorette, who was all over the field and making tackles all day, was Eastern’s Defensive Player of the Game.

Blair was the offensive player of the game for the Rams. The senior carried the ball 35 times for 207 yards and joined the Rams’ long list of 1,000-yard rushers of the season. Blair finished the year with 1,053 rushing yards after switching to quarterback midseason.

“Obviously Tre was really good today,” said Papazian. “We kept asking, ‘Do you still have one in you?’ And he kept reacting. We trust him with the ball in his hands. We know he will handle it safely and wisely.”

“You have to give the boys credit upfront, too,” he added. “It’s not an easy offense to block for that. We snap it straight to Tre and things happen fast. We tried to unbalance Bristol Eastern a bit and I think we managed that well today.”

In a game where only five passes were attempted, attacks were well grounded and both teams defended well as yards were difficult to come by. Fore had 93 yards and sophomore Jack Hartley added 55 for the Lancers. Eastern completed two of three passes for negative yards.

Central’s Nik Salinas connected with Mason Stokes for 20 yards on the only pass the Rams got airborne.

“Defensively, I believe these have been the finest 4 quarters we have performed all yr,” Papazian said. “We told the kids at halftime that Eastern was going to come out and do their best and they did. They converted, but our guys persevered and didn’t emotionally fold after the result.

“It’s been an extended season,” he added. “I’m not sure if today will erase everything that’s happened this year, but it’s definitely nice to end it with a win. I’m happy for the children. I’m happy for the seniors.”

The Rams completed the season 2-8. Eastern ended 3-7. It was the final sport for Central seniors Tre Blair, Geovannie Colon, Nik Salinas, Johnny Rios, Can Tomak, Mason Stokes, Zack Telke, Andrew Sarkis, Jonmanuel Gomez, Julius Powell and Matt Carneiro.
